trash ceramics
These sculptures and tiles were all created using shipping and packaging waste. To create them, I take the paper and plastic trash that hold objects in transit and drape slabs of clay over them, pour ceramic slip directly into them, or cast them in plaster and use them as molds. The large platters below, for example, are formed using a plastic insert from a Roomba package. The tiles were created using plastic sushi takeout trays with ornate bottoms. This process transforms dispensable objects into domestic wares that are valued and preserved, raising questions about our relationship to disposability and waste in the domestic sphere.
I’ve shown my ceramics at Cultureworks, with the support of Da Vinci Art Alliance, Umbria Arts at Manayunk Timber, and they are currently on display at Vox Populi, as part of their annual juried show.
